Amsterdam, Netherlands — This Sunday, the serene grounds of the British war cemetery in Oosterbeek will echo with the somber tones of remembrance as thousands gather to honor the Allied soldiers who gave their lives during Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem 80 years ago.
Organizers anticipate that over 10,000 visitors will attend the Airborne Memorial Service, a poignant event that marks the anniversary year of one of the most significant battles of World War II. Typically, around 5,000 people participate in the annual ceremony, a tradition that has been observed since 1945.
Given the increased attendance expected, the site has prepared an overflow area to accommodate the surge of visitors. For those unable to be on-site, the ceremony will also be broadcast online via YouTube and Omroep Gelderland.
Among the attendees will be at least one of the seven surviving Arnhem veterans, the 99-year-old Briton Geoff Roberts. Roberts, who earlier this month minted the first commemorative coin in Arnhem in honor of the Allied soldiers, will be present to pay his respects to his fallen comrades.
The event will also be graced by the presence of British Princess Anne and her husband, Timothy Laurence. The Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek, a piece of British territory in the Netherlands, is the final resting place for more than 1,750 Allied soldiers who perished during and after Operation Market Garden. The majority of those buried were British, but the cemetery also holds the remains of Polish and Dutch soldiers.
Princess Anne, who also attended the official commemoration of Operation Market Garden on Saturday, delivered a stirring speech and read a statement on behalf of her brother, King Charles. The message highlighted the profound gratitude and humility they both feel for the sacrifices made by the British Allied Forces and the Dutch Resistance and civilians during the Second World War.
As the world marks this significant anniversary, the Airborne Commemoration in Oosterbeek serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom.
