Microsoft is enhancing the transparency of its Copilot, a generative AI assistant, in how it accesses information from the internet. Starting in October, users of Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot will see specific web search queries used to generate their text prompts in the link citations section. Additionally, users will be able to see the specific websites accessed to obtain the answers to the questions they input into Copilot from today onwards.
According to a blog post from Microsoft, this transparency will provide valuable feedback to users, allowing them to understand precisely how their prompts are translated into web queries and sent to Bing for search. This transparency is aimed at helping users refine their prompts and use Copilot more effectively.
Providing this level of transparency is crucial for users to understand the process and improve their interactions with Copilot, said a Microsoft spokesperson. It ensures that users are aware of how their inputs are translated into search queries and can trust the information Copilot provides.
Furthermore, starting in the fourth quarter of 2024, Copilot administrators will be able to access and review the web search query records. This means that administrators will be able to search and audit the web queries used to retrieve answers from employees’ Copilot text prompts.
This transparency supports our mission to build a trustworthy AI, the spokesperson added. Administrators can confirm that the information Copilot searches for is relevant and appropriate.
In a recent update, Microsoft has rolled out a series of new features for Copilot users, including the ability to create automatic Copilot agents within Copilot Studio, a new Copilot Pages experience, and enhanced data protection features for users working or studying with Copilot.
These updates follow a commitment from Microsoft to enhance the trust and reliability of its AI tools. The company has been transparent about its AI development processes and the measures it takes to ensure the accuracy and security of its products.
For users, the new transparency features will offer a clearer understanding of how Copilot operates and what information it is accessing. This can be particularly useful in professional settings where data accuracy and compliance are critical.
With these changes, Microsoft aims to build a more user-friendly and trustworthy AI environment, ensuring that Copilot remains a valuable tool for both personal and professional use.
The company’s commitment to transparency and user feedback is a step towards addressing concerns around AI and data privacy. By providing clear insights into how Copilot functions, Microsoft is fostering a more open and collaborative approach to AI development.
