Title: Belgian Solar Car Reigns Supreme Again at Sasol Solar Challenge, Dutch Teams Follow in Pursuit
In an intense and closely contested race, the Belgian Innoptus Solar Team from Leuven has once again proven their dominance over their Dutch rivals, securing victory in the Sasol Solar Challenge held in South Africa. The eight-day long race, which began in Johannesburg and culminated in Cape Town, saw the Belgian team outperform the Dutch competitors, with the Twente team taking second place and the Brunel Solar Team from Delft, the four-time consecutive champion, settling for third.
The Sasol Solar Challenge is a prestigious event that showcases the prowess of solar-powered vehicles, testing their endurance and efficiency on a grueling journey across South Africa. The race is not determined by finishing time but by the distance covered by the vehicles, with teams maximizing their mileage through loops on the route. The Innoptus Solar Team from Leuven covered an impressive 4,200 kilometers, while the Twente team managed nearly 4,170 kilometers.
Driver Daan Schramade of the Delft team lamented the safety issues that hampered their comeback attempt against the Belgian and Twente teams. The route turned out to be unsafe, so we couldn’t continue our comeback against the Belgians and the team from Twente, he said. First place was no longer within reach, but we would have loved to fight for second place.
The World Solar Challenge across Australia is the most renowned solar car race, often considered the unofficial world championship. The Belgian Innoptus Solar Team has triumphed in the last two editions, succeeding the Brunel Solar Team from Delft, which won the previous three races. The Australian race features mostly flat and expansive terrain, while the South African race adds the challenge of steep mountain roads.
Leuven holds the world record for distance driven in a solar car, achieving 1,051 kilometers in twelve hours in 2022, surpassing the previous record held by Delft. The Brunel Solar Team’s goal has been to raise awareness about sustainable energy and push the limits of technology through participation in solar races worldwide. The team’s debut victory at the World Solar Challenge in 2001 marked the beginning of their mission to showcase the potential of solar power to the global audience.
The Sasol Solar Challenge concluded with a thrilling finish in Cape Town, as teams celebrated their achievements in innovation, endurance, and sustainability. The Innoptus Solar Team’s victory, breaking the daily distance record twice, solidifies their position as a formidable force in the solar car racing world. The Dutch teams, while not claiming the top spot, have demonstrated their resilience and commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions through their participation in the race.
