GPD, a manufacturer known for its innovative dual-screen laptops, has recentlyunveiled its latest offering, the GPD DUO. This device features a unique dual-screen OLED design and boasts the option of being powered by either the AMD Ryzen AI9 HX 370 processor or the Ryzen 7 8840U. While the GPD DUO starts at an attractive price of7999 yuan (approximately $1100 USD), a recent revelation has shed light on the significant cost difference between the two processor options.

According to a GPD employee who posted on Discord, the AMD Ryzen AI9 HX 370 processor comes at a price that is double that of the Ryzen 7 8840U. This explains why the GPD DUO model equipped with the HX 370 processor is pricedconsiderably higher.

The AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is a powerful processor built on the new Zen5 architecture and manufactured using a 4nm process. It features 12 cores and 24 threads, with a boost clock speed of 5.1GHz and a total compute power of80 TOPS. GPD’s official benchmarks show that the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 delivers performance comparable to the desktop AMD Ryzen 9 7950X in single-core tests, while surpassing the desktop AMD Ryzen 9 5950X in multi-core performance.

In terms of overall computing power, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 surpasses the previous generation mobile AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS and Intel Core Ultra 9 185H. The processor also boasts an integrated AMD Radeon 890M graphics card based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture, featuring 16 CUs and 1024 stream processors. This represents a 33% increase in specifications compared to the previous generation, leading to a 36% improvement in gaming performance. The processor also benefits from LPDDR5x 7500 MT/s memory, resulting in a significant increase in memory bandwidth.

The integrated GPU in the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 delivers impressive performance, surpassing the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 (mobile) in 3DMark – TimeSpy and approaching the performance of the RTX 3050 (mobile).

Furthermore, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 incorporates an XDNA 2 architecture NPU, enhancing computational efficiency and reducing overall power consumption. This NPU boasts a 50 TOPS compute power, surpassing the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite by 5 TOPS and the Apple M4 (10-CPU) by 12 TOPS.

While the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 offers impressive performance and features, its high price point might be a deterrent for some users. The significantly higher cost compared to the Ryzen 7 8840U option raises questions about whether the performance gains justify theadded expense.

Ultimately, the choice between the two processor options will depend on individual needs and budget. Users who prioritize maximum performance and are willing to pay a premium will likely opt for the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. However, those seeking a more affordable option with still impressive performance might find the Ryzen7 8840U a more attractive choice.
