Title: Nepal’s Prime Minister Oli Heads to New York for UN General Assembly
Kathmandu – Prime Minister of Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli, departed for New York today to lead the Nepali delegation at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The Prime Minister’s visit is part of Nepal’s active participation in the global forum where he is expected to address the assembly on various pressing issues.
Prime Minister Oli’s itinerary includes attending the opening session of the general debate on September 8 and a welcoming reception hosted by United States President Joe Biden on September 9. During his stay in New York, Oli will also deliver speeches at a high-level meeting on the existential threat caused by sea-level rise and at another high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance.
Additionally, Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to speak at Columbia University on the topic Nepal’s Journey: From Democracy to Economic Prosperity on September 7. He will also engage in a program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum on Nepal’s Perspective: From Transactional Justice to Climate Justice on September 11.
The Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks and meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Accompanying the Prime Minister on his trip are his wife Radhika Shakya, Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba, Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister Vishnu Prasad Rimal, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and other senior officials of the Nepali government.
PM Oli is expected to return to Nepal on September 14. His participation in the UNGA is a significant opportunity for Nepal to articulate its positions on global issues and to engage in dialogue with other world leaders.
