The 2024 China Badminton Open kicked off today, with the Liang Wang pair securing their first victory since the Olympics and Shi Yuqi advancing smoothly to the Round of 16.
In the mixed doubles category, the Chinese pair of Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi defeated the Ukrainian duo of Oleksiy and Kantimir in straight sets, winning 21-13 and 21-11. This victory marked their first win at the China Open, propelling them into the Round of 16.
In the men’s doubles, the Liang Wang pair made their first appearance since the Olympics, facing the Polish brothers, Kacper and Pawel Wawrzyniak. They dominated the match, winning in straight sets with scores of 22-20 and 21-16, securing their spot in the Round of 16 and recording their second consecutive win against the Wawrzyniak brothers.
In the women’s doubles, the Chinese pair of Li Wenmei and Zhang Shuxian defeated the Chinese Taipei duo of Zhang Jinghui and Yang Jingteng with scores of 21-17 and 21-9.
On the men’s singles side, Chinese player Shi Yuqi easily progressed to the Round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Wang Gaolun. Shi Yuqi will face Indonesia’s Kien Thiem in the next round.
In the women’s singles, seeded third, Wang Zhiyi also advanced to the Round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt, with scores of 21-14 and 21-12.
However, there were also some setbacks in the first round. The Chinese pair of Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui, after a three-set battle, were defeated by their opponents, losing 22-20, 19-21, and 17-21, and were eliminated from the tournament.
Similarly, the Chinese pair of Xie Haonan and Zeng Weihan were defeated by the Malaysian team, and the pair of Chen Baiyang and Liu Yi were eliminated by the Feiding team. In the men’s singles, Lu Guangzu lost in three sets to Li Jiahao, bowing out of the tournament.
