North Korea to Hold Supreme People’s Assembly Session in October, Discussing Constitutional Amendments

Seoul, September 16 (Yonhap) – North Korea willconvene the 11th session of the 14th Supreme People’s Assembly on October 7, according to a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Monday. The session will focus on constitutional amendments, among other issues.

The decision to hold the session was made during a plenary meeting of theStanding Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly on Sunday, presided over by Chairman Choi Ryong-hae. The meeting unanimously agreed to convene the session in Pyongyang on October 7, where discussions will center around revising and supplementing the Socialist Constitution.

This will be the first session of the Supreme People’s Assembly since January, marking a significant event in North Korean politics. The upcoming session is expected to implement the directives given by Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un earlier this yearregarding constitutional amendments.

These directives include the addition of territorial provisions to the constitution and the removal of references to unification. The session is also expected to discuss and approve the Light Industry Law and the Foreign Economic Law, as well as oversee the implementation of the Quality Supervision Law.

Theplenary meeting on Sunday also passed the Socialist Material Exchange Law and the Public Building Management Law, along with revisions and supplements to the Road Traffic Law and the Foreign Economic Arbitration Law.

The upcoming session is anticipated to be a crucial event for North Korea, as it signifies a potential shift in thecountry’s political and legal landscape. The constitutional amendments, particularly the removal of references to unification, could be interpreted as a sign of North Korea’s hardening stance on the issue of reunification with South Korea.

The session will also provide insight into North Korea’s economic priorities, with the discussions on the Light Industry Law and the Foreign Economic Law suggesting a focus on domestic economic development and international trade.

The Supreme People’s Assembly, North Korea’s legislature, is a largely ceremonial body with limited real power. However, the upcoming session is expected to be a significant event, as it will likely witness the formalization ofkey policy decisions made by Kim Jong-un.

The session will be closely watched by international observers for clues about North Korea’s future direction, particularly in terms of its nuclear program, its relationship with South Korea, and its economic policies.
