Beijing, China – Longcheer Semiconductor, a leading Chinese semiconductor company, has recently revealed significant progress in its in-house GPU development during the 2024 semi-annual earnings briefing. The company’s Chairman and General Manager, Hu Weiwu, showcased the latest advancements, particularly highlighting the 9A2000 GPU, which is poised to compete with NVIDIA’s RTX 2080 in terms of performance.
The 9A2000 GPU is set to be a major leap forward for Longcheer, boasting performance that is eight to ten times greater than its predecessor, the 9A1000. This new GPU is designed to be a significant upgrade from the 9A1000, which is targeted at entry-level graphics and AI inference acceleration (32TOP). The 9A1000 is expected to have its code frozen by the end of the year, with an aim to complete the physical design.
Hu Weiwu emphasized the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of GPU technology. “In the current manufacturing process, we have achieved the best we can with the 9A2000,” he said. “We are looking to optimize the design to reduce silicon area and power consumption. On this foundation, we will use more advanced processes to aim for a breakthrough with the 9A3000.”
Longcheer’s 9A2000 GPU is designed to be a direct competitor to NVIDIA’s RTX 2080, a powerful graphics card known for its high performance in gaming and professional applications. According to Hu Weiwu, the 9A2000 should be able to support the upcoming game “Heishen: Monkey King” from a GPGPU (General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit) performance standpoint.
While the 9A1000 GPU does not currently support DirectX 12, Hu Weiwu revealed that the company might consider adding this support in the future as the 9A series GPGPU matures. This move could further enhance Longcheer’s GPU offerings, making them more versatile for a wider range of applications.
Responding to an investor’s question about whether Longcheer could release a self-developed CPU+GPU computer that supports the smooth running of “Heishen: Monkey King,” Hu Weiwu was confident. “From the CPU performance perspective, the 3A6000 combined with a commercial GPU should be sufficient,” he explained. “However, software adaptation or binary translation may be required to resolve software compatibility issues. From the GPGPU performance standpoint, the display performance of the 9A2000 should be adequate.”
Longcheer’s advancements in GPU technology are a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and self-sufficiency in the semiconductor industry. As China continues to invest heavily in technology and innovation, companies like Longcheer are at the forefront of driving this progress.
