China’s President Xi Jinping recently held meetings with the Prime Ministers of Norway and Spain, emphasizing the importance of global development and bilateral cooperation between China and these European nations.
During his meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, President Xi expressed his appreciation for the strong historical ties between China and Norway, which celebrated their 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations. He highlighted the mutual respect, appreciation, and learning that have characterized the relationship over the years.
President Xi emphasized that further developing China-Norway friendship and cooperation is not only in the interest of the two peoples but also aligns with the global trend of closer international connections and shared destiny. In light of the ongoing global challenges and uncertainties, China will continue to pursue the path of peaceful development, reform and opening up, and contribute to stability and certainty in the world.
The President also highlighted the importance of maintaining mutual respect and seeking common ground while reserving differences, as well as the need to deepen practical cooperation in various fields such as green environmental protection, energy transformation, maritime shipping, agriculture and fishery products, and electric vehicles. He also emphasized the importance of enhancing exchanges and cooperation in education, science and technology, culture, tourism, and winter sports, as well as promoting personnel exchanges, especially among young people.
In addition, President Xi called for closer communication and cooperation on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, in order to promote a true multilateralism and an equitable and inclusive world multipolarity and economic globalization. He also expressed hope that Norway would play a positive role in promoting the healthy and stable development of China-EU relations.
The Norwegian Prime Minister Solberg, for her part, conveyed warm greetings from King Harald V to President Xi. She expressed her country’s respect for China’s sovereignty and its commitment to the one-China policy. She also emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation between the two countries in areas such as green development, climate change, maritime shipping, agriculture and aquaculture, and new energy vehicles, among others.
In a separate meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, President Xi highlighted the 50th anniversary of China-Spain diplomatic relations, noting that the past year has seen close exchanges and interaction between the two countries. He emphasized the importance of deepening and expanding cooperation between the two countries in new areas, especially in high-tech fields such as artificial intelligence and the digital economy, to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.
The President also expressed his hope that Spain would continue to provide a fair, just, safe, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises investing in Spain. He called for strengthening cultural exchanges and promoting people-to-people friendship through language teaching, youth, culture, and tourism.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of promoting multilateralism and free trade and expressed willingness to deepen cooperation in the global South and in international organizations such as the United Nations and the G20. They also exchanged views on hot issues such as the Ukraine crisis, emphasizing the importance of promoting a political settlement of the crisis through dialogue and consultation.
These meetings demonstrate China’s commitment to promoting global development and strengthening bilateral relations with European nations.
