Nintendo’s much-anticipated successor to the popular Nintendo Switch, tentatively named NS2, has sparked a new wave of excitement with rumors suggesting it may adopt a dual-screen design reminiscent of the Wii U. According to recent reports, the new console could offer a unique gaming experience, either through a dual-screen handheld device or by synchronizing the handheld screen with a television to provide the dual-screen functionality.

Nintendo NS2 Rumored to Feature Dual-Screen Experience Similar to Wii U

In the latest episode of the VGC podcast, GamesIndustry.biz editor-in-chief Chris Dring mentioned that he had heard from sources that NS2 would be a dual-screen product. While the exact nature of the design remains speculative, it is leaning towards the latter scenario, where the handheld device’s screen works in tandem with the television to provide the dual-screen experience.

The dual-screen concept is best known from the Wii U, which featured a dedicated display on its tablet-like controller. Some first-party games leveraged this feature to enhance gameplay, but the console did not receive extensive support from third-party developers. Despite this, the Wii U’s unique approach sparked interest in how a similar setup would function in a handheld mode with a single screen.

It is likely that the dual-screen experience on the NS2 will be optional, similar to most games that supported it on the Wii U. The setup could be utilized to display menus or maps on the handheld device’s screen while the television serves as the primary display for the game itself.

Previous rumors suggested that the NS2 would come equipped with an 8-inch LCD screen. Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hasegawa previously reported that a new Nintendo device would double the shipment of entertainment displays in 2024. According to sources, this device, presumably the NS2, is said to feature an 8-inch screen.

The introduction of a dual-screen design could represent a significant shift in Nintendo’s approach to handheld gaming. The Wii U’s dual-screen functionality was innovative but failed to gain widespread adoption among third-party developers, possibly due to its complex design and limited market penetration. However, the success of the Nintendo Switch has shown that there is a strong appetite for unique gaming experiences that blur the lines between handheld and home console gaming.

If the NS2 does indeed adopt a dual-screen design, it could open up new possibilities for game developers to create innovative titles that take advantage of the additional screen real estate. This could range from enhanced multiplayer experiences to more immersive single-player adventures that utilize both screens for different purposes.

Nintendo has a history of pushing the boundaries of gaming technology, and the potential introduction of a dual-screen NS2 could be another testament to the company’s commitment to innovation. However, as with all rumors, it is important to take these reports with a grain of salt until official confirmation from Nintendo is provided.

The gaming community is eagerly awaiting further details about the NS2, and the possibility of a dual-screen design has certainly added fuel to the speculation fire. With the success of the Nintendo Switch and the potential for a new and improved gaming experience, the NS2 could be a significant player in the next generation of gaming consoles.
