Zeekr X Test Drive: A Perfect Blend of Performance and Comfort

Zeekr X, a new electric SUV from Geely’s premium brand, has been making waves in the Hong Kong market. The car comes in two versions: a rear-wheel drive model starting at HK$249,000 and a four-wheel drive model starting at HK$269,000. I had the opportunity to test drive the four-wheel drive version, which came equipped with optional 20-inch wheels (the standard size is 19 inches).

The Zeekr X’s performance is undeniably impressive, especially when compared to the popular BYD ATTO 3. The ATTO 3’s front-wheel drive model, even with its recent facelift, is priced at HK$258,000. The Zeekr X’s four-wheel drive system delivers a combined 428 horsepower and 543Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds. The 66kWh battery offers a WLTP-rated range of 420 kilometers, and the car supports 150kW fast charging, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes. While the ATTO 3 is more geared towards family use, the Zeekr X’s performance, even in its rear-wheel driveversion, is clearly superior.

Beyond its raw power, the Zeekr X excels in handling and overall driving experience. The car provides a comfortable ride for passengers, but it also delivers a level of driving enjoyment that surpasses the ATTO 3. This was evident during my previous test drive on theNingbo race track. If you prioritize performance and driving pleasure, the Zeekr X is a compelling choice.

A Symphony of Silence and Control

Despite its impressive performance, the Zeekr X remains a practical daily driver. One of the most striking aspects of the car is its remarkablequietness. The cabin’s noise isolation reaches European standards, a rarity among Chinese electric vehicles. The Zeekr X excels in noise suppression, effectively minimizing both wind and road noise. This, combined with the absence of engine noise, creates a serene and comfortable driving experience. The quietness iscomparable to that of an Audi, making a lasting impression.

The four-wheel drive version I tested exhibited excellent cornering and traction. Even in wet conditions, the Zeekr X is expected to maintain good traction, providing drivers with confidence and safety. During my track day experience in Hangzhou, Inoticed several distinctive features of the Zeekr X. Despite its SUV body style, the car has a low center of gravity, resulting in a driving position similar to that of a regular passenger car. This is unusual for an SUV.

Superior Suspension and Dynamic Performance

The Zeekr X’s dynamic performance is equally impressive. Both the rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions demonstrate agility and responsiveness. The rear-wheel drive version offers a more playful driving experience, with a noticeable tail wag, while the four-wheel drive version excels in handling stability.

The suspension system deliversa satisfying experience. The firm suspension setup minimizes body roll during cornering, and the car effectively absorbs road bumps. Neither the driver nor passengers experience excessive jolting. The Zeekr X also excels in shock absorption, providing a comfortable ride over speed bumps without excessive bouncing.

The ZeekrX’s regenerative braking system is a highlight, offering two levels of intensity. Electric car enthusiasts will appreciate the strong regenerative braking, which contributes to a smoother driving experience. The braking force is well-balanced, enhancing the overall driving feel.

The car is also equipped with a Head-Up Display (HUD) that displays information such as speed and speed limits, reminding drivers to avoid exceeding the limit.

Space and Comfort Considerations

The Zeekr X measures 4,432mm in length, 1,836mm in width, and 1,566mm inheight, sharing the same SEA modular platform as the Smart #1. While the Zeekr X is 23mm shorter than the ATTO 3, it has a 30mm longer wheelbase, is 49mm lower, and 39mm narrower. These dimensional changes affectthe rear seat space. While knee room is generous, legroom for extending legs is slightly limited.

The rear seats are lower, offering a comfortable and soft experience, but they may feel cramped for taller passengers or those with long legs. The seatbacks and cushions provide good support, but leg support couldbe improved, which might be a drawback for passengers seeking ultimate comfort.

The Zeekr X also features a large panoramic sunroof, which offers UV protection but requires further testing for heat insulation in high temperatures. The rear seats lack Type-C ports, and the air vents are positioned below the B-pillar, which is slightly inconvenient. The rear center console includes an armrest and two cupholders, providing some convenience. The car also offers an optional refrigerator that can reach a freezing temperature of -10 degrees Celsius, a rare feature for an SUV.

In Conclusion

The Zeekr X excels in performance and driving enjoyment, particularly for those seeking dynamic driving experiences. Both the rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions offer distinct driving sensations. As a compact SUV, the Zeekr X still has room for improvement in terms of space and comfort, but its quietness, handling, and suspension performance are commendable. It is an excellent electric car choice that seamlessly blends performance and comfort.
