Development to Replace Lake Country’s Airport Inn Garners Initial Approval

Kelowna, BC – In a move that has sparked considerable excitement in Lake Country, the local council has granted initial approval for a major apartment development that will replace the aging Airport Inn. The Calgary-based developer, Eagle Crest Construction, has proposed a four-building complex featuring 364 rental units at 11474 Petrie Road.

During the council meeting on Tuesday (Sept. 3), members expressed their enthusiasm for the project, noting the developer’s commitment to maintaining rentals for the next five decades. Councilor Cara Reed commended the application, highlighting the scale of the development and the minimal variance required, calling it an impressive achievement.

Infrastructure Considerations

Reed also inquired about potential upgrades to the intersection at Highway 97 (Robinson Road) in light of the increased traffic the development could bring. Brian Zurek, Planning Manager for the district, reassured the council that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure had been consulted and did not require any immediate infrastructure improvements. He added that the development team would work with the applicant on future frontage works, service improvements, and other necessary upgrades.

Addressing the Housing Shortage

Zurek pointed out that the development is a much-needed addition to Lake Country’s housing supply, which has been struggling to keep up with demand. The district has required approximately 250 housing units per year between 2021 and 2023, yet historically, the district has issued an average of only 147 permits per year (2016-2021). The new development is expected to help bridge this gap.

Community Reaction

Mayor Blair Ireland echoed the community’s sentiment, expressing his eagerness to see the Airport Inn demolished and a new development take its place. The former owner of the inn had provided housing for many individuals over the years, but the building’s condition had led to numerous calls for service.

The approval of the development marks a significant step forward for Lake Country, addressing both the need for additional housing and the desire for urban renewal. With the project moving forward, residents and council members alike are looking forward to the transformation of the area.
