Manufacturing Embraces Emerging Tech: Platform Engineering and FIDO Authentication Take Center Stage
Taipei, Taiwan – The manufacturing sector is embracing emerging technologies atan accelerated pace, driven by the ongoing wave of digital transformation and the growing importance of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) initiatives. This is according tothe latest findings of the iThome 2024 CIO Survey, which surveyed 422 IT and cybersecurity executives from large enterprises, government agencies, and universities in Taiwan.
The survey reveals that manufacturing companies are prioritizing IT modernization, with a significant focus on DevOps, cybersecurity, and ESG transformation. This year, more than half of the manufacturing companies surveyed are prioritizing the completion of carbonfootprint monitoring and systematization, with carbon footprint dashboards becoming a mainstream emerging technology.
Platform Engineering and FIDO Authentication Emerge as Hottest Technologies
Two technologies that have emerged as unexpected frontrunners in the manufacturing sector are platformengineering and FIDO (Fast Identity Online) authentication. Platform engineering has seen a significant surge in adoption, with a jump of over five positions in the rankings, making it a hot technology. This surge is attributed to the increasing adoption of platform engineering by manufacturing companies.
FIDO authentication, on the other hand, is gaining traction due to the growing adoption of smart factories and the Internet of Things (IoT).
ChatGPT-Like Applications Gaining Popularity
While traditional non-generative AI/ML applications remain mainstream, their adoption rate has plateaued this year. However, Generative AI (GAI) technologies are catching up rapidly, approaching a 10% adoption rate. The survey also highlights the growing popularity of ChatGPT-like applications, RAP (Robotic Process Automation), and AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) in the manufacturing sector.
Cloud and Low-Code Development Remain Key
Thesurvey found that multi-cloud and hybrid cloud architectures continue to be the dominant infrastructure model in the manufacturing sector. With limited manpower, low-code development is becoming an essential tool for manufacturers, making it the leading technology in the application architecture and development category.
Data and AI Adoption Remains Strong
Despite adecline in big data investments this year, manufacturing companies are still actively adopting data and AI technologies. The survey indicates that while big data investments may be slowing down, the adoption of various data and AI technologies remains strong.
Survey Methodology
The iThome CIO and Cybersecurity Survey was conducted from February 15to March 15, 2024. The survey covered a wide range of industries, including general manufacturing (17.8%), high-tech manufacturing (22.7%), services (23.7%), finance (12.8%), healthcare (13.3%), and government andeducation (9.7%).
Conclusion
The iThome 2024 CIO Survey provides valuable insights into the evolving technology landscape in the manufacturing sector. The adoption of emerging technologies like platform engineering, FIDO authentication, and ChatGPT-like applications highlights the industry’s commitment to digital transformation and innovation. As manufacturing companies continue to invest in these technologies, they are poised to unlock new efficiencies, enhance productivity, and drive sustainable growth.
