Key West-East Passageway in South-West Guangdong, China, MakesProgress with Completion of Left Tunnel
Guangzhou, China, September 3, 2024 – Construction of the Yangchun-Xinyi (Guangdong-Guangxi border) Expressway, a vital transportation artery inSouth-West Guangdong, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the left tunnel of the Bantangling Tunnel. This breakthrough marks a crucial step towards the timelycompletion of the entire expressway.
The Yangchun-Xinyi Expressway, spanning approximately 142 kilometers, is an extension of the Zhongshan-Yangchun Expressway. It traverses the territories of Yangjiang and Maoming citiesin Guangdong Province. Designed for a speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour, the expressway will be constructed to a dual six-lane standard.
Upon completion, the Yangchun-Xinyi Expressway will establish a swifttransportation link between the central region of South-West Guangdong and the southern part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. This will significantly reduce travel time between Yangchun and Xinyi, enhancing the region’s freight transport capacity and improving travel conditions for local residents. The project is strategically important for thedevelopment of Guangdong’s highway network and aligns with the provincial government’s strategic initiative to promote rural revitalization.
The Bantangling Tunnel, situated in Dapo Town, Gaozhou City, Maoming, is 2782 meters long with a maximum depth of 225 meters. Designed for adual six-lane configuration, the tunnel is being constructed by China Railway Sixth Bureau Group, under the investment of China Railway South Investment.
The construction of the Bantangling Tunnel has presented significant challenges due to the presence of predominantly gneissic granite, leading to a high proportion of Grade IV and V surrounding rock, making theconstruction process complex and risky. To address these challenges, the project team has implemented advanced technologies and equipment, including small-diameter pipe-shrink-hole integrated drilling equipment, wet-spray mechanical arms, hydraulic secondary lining carriages, and integrated maintenance and inspection carriages. This strategic deployment of cutting-edge technology has enabled the projectto achieve efficient and intelligent construction.
The completion of the left tunnel of the Bantangling Tunnel signifies a major achievement in the Yangchun-Xinyi Expressway project. This milestone reinforces the project’s commitment to timely completion, ultimately contributing to the development of South-West Guangdong’s transportation infrastructure and the overall economicprosperity of the region.
