NIO Inc., the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has taken legal action against the spread of false bankruptcy rumors that recently emerged on social media. The company’s legal department announced on its official WeChat account that it has filed a police report and will pursue legal responsibility against those who planned, manufactured, and spread the false information.
The rumors, which claimed that NIO had declared bankruptcy, began to circulate on various online platforms, sparking concern and confusion among the public. The company swiftly responded, denouncing the rumors as malicious fabrications and a serious violation of the law.
We have noticed the false information about NIO declaring bankruptcy that has been suddenly spread online. This is a serious illegal act, and we have filed a police report, the statement from NIO’s legal department read.
The rumors were quickly disseminated by some netizens and social media users, but many others expressed skepticism or outright denied the claims. IT Home, a popular Chinese tech news website, found that several bloggers had shared screenshots of the rumors, but most were doubtful of their veracity.
Despite the false rumors, NIO has continued to show strong performance in the EV market. In July of this year, the company delivered 20,498 vehicles, marking a 0.18% year-on-year increase from the 20,462 vehicles delivered in July of the previous year. Additionally, deliveries for the period from January to July 2024 reached 107,924 vehicles, representing a 43.9% year-on-year increase. As of July 31, NIO has cumulatively delivered a total of 557,518 vehicles.
The rumors come at a time when NIO is experiencing significant growth and expansion. On August 26, a blogger reported that due to policy incentives, NIO had added approximately 5,000 new orders in the week leading up to August 25. The blogger also stated that it was basically confirmed that NIO would continue to add over 20,000 new orders this month, indicating stability in the company’s sales.
The spread of false information can have severe consequences for a company’s reputation and financial health. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, NIO’s legal department has vowed to take all necessary measures to hold the responsible parties accountable.
We will not tolerate any malicious rumors that damage our company’s reputation and the interests of our stakeholders. We will use all legal means available to us to pursue those responsible, the statement continued.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge that companies face in managing their online reputation and combating misinformation in the digital age. As the EV market continues to grow, companies like NIO must be vigilant in protecting their brand and ensuring accurate information is disseminated to the public.
NIO’s proactive approach in addressing the rumors reflects its commitment to transparency and accountability. The company has also thanked netizens for their support and for providing tips that helped uncover the false information.
As the investigation unfolds, NIO remains focused on its core mission of driving innovation in the EV industry and delivering high-quality products and services to its customers. The company’s dedication to sustainable transportation and technological advancement continues to gain recognition both in China and globally.
