World’s First Double-Deck Cable-Stayed and Suspension Bridge Completed in Anhui, China

Anhui, China, August 27,2024 – The main bridge of the G3 Tongling Yangtze River Highway-Railway Bridge, the world’s first double-deckcable-stayed and suspension bridge, was successfully completed in Anhui province today. The bridge, which combines the advantages of both cable-stayed and suspensionbridges, marks a significant milestone in bridge engineering.

The completion of the main bridge was achieved at 11:00 AM local time, with the successful welding of the segmental steel beams on both sides of the bridge. TheG3 Tongling Yangtze River Highway-Railway Bridge boasts a main span of 988 meters, making it a remarkable feat of engineering. Its unique design, incorporating both cable-stayed and suspension bridge elements, allows for alarger span, heavier load capacity, and greater rigidity compared to traditional bridges of similar scale. This innovative approach also translates into improved economic efficiency and enhanced driving safety.

The bridge, spanning a total length of 11.88 kilometers, serves as a crucial transportation link across the Yangtze River, connecting the citiesof Tongling and Anqing. It provides three vital crossing functions: a six-lane highway, a high-speed intercity railway, and a freight railway.

The upper deck of the bridge is designed for high-speed traffic, accommodating a six-lane highway with a design speed of 100kilometers per hour. The lower deck houses a four-track railway system, comprising two lines for the Hechi intercity railway with a design speed of 250 kilometers per hour and two lines for the Tongling South to Jiangbei Port railway, which will eventually extend to Zongyang and connect to Anqing, with a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

The construction of the G3 Tongling Yangtze River Highway-Railway Bridge involved the implementation of numerous advanced technologies and equipment, resulting in four pioneering innovations, eight process innovations, and 14 authorized patents. These technological advancements showcase the ingenuity andexpertise of the engineers involved in this ambitious project.

The completion of this bridge signifies a major step forward in China’s infrastructure development and its commitment to innovation in bridge engineering. The G3 Tongling Yangtze River Highway-Railway Bridge is expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency, boost economic growth in the region, andenhance connectivity between cities.

This landmark project serves as a testament to China’s growing prowess in infrastructure construction and its dedication to pushing the boundaries of engineering excellence. The bridge is poised to become a symbol of modern China’s technological advancements and its commitment to building a more connected and prosperous nation.
