At the HICOOL 2024 Global Startup Summit, which concluded smoothly on August 25 at the China International Exhibition Center, winners expressed a sense of being under the spotlight of both government support and industry capital. This annual event, organized in Beijing, has become a crucial platform for fostering innovative talent and enterprises with global impact.

Over the past five years, HICOOL has nurtured and incubated 127 specialized and innovative companies, along with 16 unicorn enterprises. This year’s summit witnessed a record-breaking participation, with 7,406 startup projects from 124 countries and regions, involving 9,700 entrepreneurial talents.

One of the winners, Rock, the co-founder of Achievement Medical Technology Co., Ltd., a company specializing in AI-driven smart orthopedics, shared his experience. Our team is dedicated to research and development, commercialization, and productization in the industry. This is our first foray into entrepreneurship. During the competition, we truly felt the attention from both the government and industry capital. Rock’s company was awarded second place for its next-generation joint replacement surgery robot system, a success he attributes to the policy support from Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA).

At the HICOOL 2024 summit’s BDA专场, entrepreneurs had the opportunity to share their创业 journeys. Rock elaborated, In the early stages of commercialization, we require substantial R&D funding. The BDA, recognizing biopharmaceuticals as one of its four key industries, has provided various funds and assistance in understanding relevant industry incentives. HICOOL has also invested resources in our project, helping us find a suitable location, increasing our visibility, connecting us with potential investors, and navigating regulatory agencies. All of this has been instrumental in addressing our challenges and accelerating our progress towards obtaining the robot registration certificate by 2025.

These testimonials reflect Beijing’s commitment to becoming an international center for scientific innovation and a highland for top talent, as well as its endeavor to cultivate a fertile ground for global entrepreneurship. The city has been proactive in refining talent引进 policies, strengthening incentives, and improving support systems, which have expanded the scope for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Statistics reveal that in 2023, Beijing was home to 835 academicians, accounting for 45.4% of the national total, ranking first in the country. The city also led globally with 411 scientists from the Beijing region listed on the Highly Cited Scientists list. The number of national high-tech enterprises in Beijing reached 28,300, and an average of 337 tech companies were established daily, both topping the national rankings.

Moreover, Beijing boasts 114 unicorn companies, has nurtured 12,750 innovative中小企业, and counts 8,754 municipal-level specialized and distinctive (专精特新) companies and 795 national little giant enterprises. The city has also become a hub for international organizations, with 115, including the Global Service Trade Alliance, establishing a presence.

The BDA representative highlighted future plans, emphasizing the continued support of early-stage and growth-oriented companies through科创, talent, and seed funds. They also intend to expand the scale of guiding funds, enhance post-investment empowerment, and facilitate rapid growth. The focus will be on providing exceptional services to businesses, investing in industrial chains, and fostering a robust industrial ecosystem. The city will also increase support for market-oriented early-stage funds, fostering a collaborative environment for innovation and startup projects.
