Construction of the key transportation link in Southwest Guangdong, the Yangxin Expressway connecting Yangchun to Xinyi (Guangdong-Guangxi border), has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the bridge deck installation on the New Feng River Bridge. The milestone, announced on August 26, marks a major step forward in the project’s timeline and paves the way for the subsequent construction of the Xinhua Bridge.
The Yangxin Expressway, an essential fast route linking the central part of Southwest Guangdong to the southern region of the Greater Bay Area, is approximately 142 kilometers long and is designed as a six-lane expressway with a speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour. Once completed, it will significantly enhance regional connectivity and contribute to the economic development of the areas it serves.
The New Feng River Bridge, a critical component of the expressway, was constructed by China Railway Sixth Bureau under the supervision of China Railway and Southern Investment. Located in Zhaojing Village, Yangjiang, the bridge is situated amidst a challenging topography with steep slopes on either side and a significant elevation difference of around 78 meters. The bridge features a nine-span design, each 30 meters long, with a total length of 276.4 meters and a width of 16.5 meters. The superstructure consists of precast prestressed concrete simply supported small-box girders, while the substructure employs column piers and column-type abutments.
According to China Railway Sixth Bureau, the successful completion of the New Feng River Bridge’s deck installation was the result of meticulous planning and effective coordination throughout the manufacturing, transportation, and installation phases. This achievement ensures a solid foundation for the subsequent bridge deck work on the Xinhua Bridge and further progress along the expressway.
The Yangxin Expressway is an extension of the Zhongshan-Yangchun Expressway, and its construction is crucial for improving transportation conditions and fostering economic growth in the region. The project has attracted attention from international media, with the likes of Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily, CCTV, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times reporting on its progress.
The Greater Bay Area, which includes Hong Kong, Macao, and key cities in Guangdong, is a strategic economic zone aimed at fostering integration and cooperation. The completion of the Yangxin Expressway will not only shorten travel time between Southwest Guangdong and the Greater Bay Area’s southern hub but also stimulate economic activities and facilitate the movement of goods and people.
In recent years, infrastructure development in China has seen significant advancements, with the country investing heavily in high-speed rail, expressways, and other transportation networks. The Yangxin Expressway project is a testament to the country’s commitment to improving connectivity and supporting regional development.
With the successful completion of the New Feng River Bridge, the project team is now poised to move forward with the remaining construction tasks, ensuring the expressway’s timely completion and its eventual contribution to the economic vitality of Southwest Guangdong and the Greater Bay Area.
