Jiamusi, Heilongjiang, August 25, 2024 – Huinan County, located in the eastern part of Heilongjiang Province, is experiencinga purple perilla boom, with over 100 products derived from the herb being exported globally. The county, known as the Purple PerillaCapital of China, is leveraging its unique geographical advantages and rich history of perilla cultivation to build a thriving industry.
Purple perilla, a member of the mint family, is renowned for its rich nutritional profile, boasting vitamins, flavonoids, and minerals. It is one of the 60 medicinal and edible plants officially recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Health. Huinan County, situated within the world’s largest black soil region, the Sanjiang Plain, benefits fromthe fertile soil and temperate continental monsoon climate, making it an ideal location for perilla cultivation. The county boasts a stable annual perilla planting area of 100,000 mu (approximately 6,667 hectares), accounting for about 30% of China’s total perilla seedproduction.
Since the introduction of artificial perilla cultivation in 1953, Huinan County has witnessed a transformation from small-scale backyard planting for personal consumption to a fully integrated industry encompassing cultivation, processing, sales, and brand development. The county’s commitment to sustainable practices is evident in its focuson organic cultivation, with the demonstration farm employing zero-chemical fertilizer and pesticide methods. The organic perilla produced here boasts a 90% organic matter content, a 45% oil yield, and a remarkable 69.2% alpha-linolenic acid content, making it highly sought afterboth domestically and internationally.
The recent Third Second Jiamusi Sanjiang Tourism Festival and the Fourth Huinan Purple Perilla Culture Festival showcased the diverse range of perilla products and their culinary applications. Guests were treated to a variety of dishes featuring perilla, including grilled meat wrapped in perilla leaves and perillacoffee, highlighting the herb’s versatility.
Perilla food is suitable for all ages, remarked Wang Kun, Chairman of Nanjing Yinqiyuan Jiayuan, a long-time distributor of Huinan perilla products. The variety of perilla products in Huinan is expanding, offering a promising marketoutlook.
Huinan County has actively pursued strategic partnerships with universities to drive technological advancements in the perilla industry. The county has established 15 science and technology platforms, including the Huinan Branch of the Jiangnan University National Technology Transfer Center and the Purple Perilla Deep Processing Engineering Technology Research Center. Theseplatforms have yielded two perilla product development patents, paving the way for further innovation.
The county currently boasts seven deep-processing enterprises, which have developed over 120 products across ten categories, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, health supplements, food, and condiments. At the production facility of Huinan Nongshenyuan Food Co., Ltd., workers are busy packaging cold-pressed and refined perilla oil.
So far this year, our company has exported about 1,500 tons of perilla powder to South Korea, explained Lu Lifei, Chairman of Nongshenyuan Food Co., Ltd.South Korea is our primary export market. In addition to perilla food products, our perilla toothpaste and soap have also been well-received by customers. Our next goal is to leverage the high nutritional value of perilla oil to expand into overseas markets like the United States, Canada, and Australia.
The recent Huinan Purple Perilla Industry Integration and Development Cooperation Exchange Meeting witnessed strong interest from international partners. An Xiangxuan, President of JS Trading Co., Ltd. in South Korea, emphasized that China is a major source of perilla imports for South Korea. He expressed his hope for collaboration to promote the diverseutilization of perilla and further elevate its international standing and influence.
