Over 5,000 Participate in Malaysia-China Friendship Runin Sabah, Celebrating 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, MALAYSIA – August 25, 2024 – The 2024 Malaysia-China Friendship Runtook place in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on August 25th, attracting over 5,000 participants from various ethnic groups in Sabahand the Chinese community residing in the state.

The event, organized by the Sabah Malaysia-China Friendship Association, was supported by the Sabah State Government, the Chinese Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, the Sabah Ministry of Youth andSports, and the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Environment.

Starting at 5:00 AM, participants began gathering at the starting point. At 6:00 AM, the race was officially flagged off by adistinguished group of guests including Datuk Frankie Poon, Sabah Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship representing the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Mr. Hu Yishan, President of the Sabah Malaysia-China Friendship Association, and Mr. Ou Yang Huifeng, Deputy Consul Generalof China in Kota Kinabalu.

The sight of over 5,000 runners taking off was a testament to the strong bond between Malaysia and China. Many participants proudly displayed the national flags of both countries, expressing their heartfelt wishes for continued friendship and cooperation.

This year marked the fifth anniversary ofthe Malaysia-China Friendship Run, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China. The event saw an unprecedented turnout, reflecting the widespread enthusiasm and support from all sectors of society.

To commemorate this milestone, the organizers designed a special commemorative medal for the participants. The medal, shapedlike the number 50, incorporated elements of both Sabah and Chinese culture, including the panda, proboscis monkey, and the Great Wall of China. This symbolic design aimed to represent the enduring friendship and cooperation between Malaysia and China.

The commemorative medal quickly became a highlight of the event. Many runners, aftercompleting the race and receiving their medals, proudly held them up for photos and selfies.

Among the participants was Evan, a student from the University of Sabah, who shared that this was his second time participating in the Friendship Run. He expressed his appreciation for the event, stating that it provided a platform for people to cometogether, run, and strengthen the friendship between Malaysia and China, particularly between Sabah and China.

Datuk Frankie Poon expressed his satisfaction with the growth of the Malaysia-China Friendship Run. He highlighted that the event has become one of the largest sporting events in Sabah, signifying the deepening ties between Malaysia and China and promotingmutual understanding between the two peoples.

Hu Yishan, President of the Sabah Malaysia-China Friendship Association, shared that the Friendship Run has not only taken root in Sabah but has also expanded to China. This year, a similar event was held in Zhaoqing, China, attracting hundreds of Malaysian Chinese participants. He furtherrevealed plans to organize more Friendship Runs in Chinese cities, solidifying its role as a bridge of friendship between Malaysia and China.

The 2024 Malaysia-China Friendship Run stands as a powerful symbol of the enduring bond between Malaysia and China. The event, through its vibrant participation and symbolic gestures, underscores theshared commitment to fostering mutual understanding, cooperation, and friendship between the two nations.
