“Iron Plate” Train and “Lung-Cleaning Doctors”: Keeping Passengers Coolin the Heat
Keywords: Train lung cleaning, air conditioning maintenance, Lanzhou Rolling Stock Depot
Content:
Under the scorching sun, the passenger car preparation yard of the Lanzhou Rolling Stock Depot resembles a giant “iron plate,” with temperatures on the roof reaching nearly 60 degrees Celsius. Heat waves roll over the yard. However, a group of “lung-cleaning doctors”in work clothes are busy on the roofs, braving the scorching heat to maintain and repair the train’s air conditioning systems, ensuring a cool journey for passengers.
These are the air conditioning maintenance personnel of the Lanzhou Rolling Stock Depot. During the peak travel season, they have adjusted the frequency of air conditioning auxiliary device inspections from once every two trains to once per train, ensuring that every train in operation has normal equipment.
Air conditioning units are like the “lungs”of passenger trains, not only providing cooling but also essential for ventilation. While the train is in motion, the air conditioning units continuously draw fresh air from outside into the carriages and then exhaust the air inside to the outside, achieving air exchange between the carriage interior and the external environment.
“Compressors, gas-liquidseparators, and other components are prone to poor cooling effects due to dust accumulation and poor heat dissipation during prolonged high-temperature operation, requiring us to clean the inside and outside of the air conditioning units regularly,” said Ma Fangzheng, the head of air conditioning maintenance.
To complete the air conditioning inspection of a train, they need to climb onto the roof, which is over four meters high. Under the scorching sun of nearly 60 degrees Celsius, they inspect the refrigeration system, piping, compressor unit wiring, condenser, evaporator, and heating system, their clothes soaked in sweat.
After completing the roof inspections, they need to crawlinto the carriage to check the status of the electrical distribution cabinet. By this time, the carriage, after hours of exposure to the sun, is like a “large steamer,” with the electrical distribution cabinet’s touch screen displaying a temperature of 51 degrees Celsius inside the electrical room.
“During the peak travelseason, when there is continuous high temperature, it is crucial to ensure the normal operation of the air conditioning system during train operation. As the first line of defense for air conditioning, our responsibility is to ensure that the air conditioning system of every train in operation is in good condition,” said Ma Zhichi, another airconditioning maintenance worker, while checking the equipment.
In the fiery preparation yard, there are many “lung-cleaning doctors” like them, shuttling through the “large furnace.” Throughout the peak travel season, each of them shuttles back and forth between the tracks every day, inspecting the air conditioning and electrical equipment ofnearly nine trains, over 130 carriages, using their sweat and hard work to ensure a cool journey for passengers.
