Yichang, Hubei: Number of Summer Migratory Birds Shows SignificantIncrease, Reflecting Improved Ecological Environment

Yichang, August 23 (Xinhua) – The Yichang Forestry and Horticulture Bureau in Hubei Province reported on August 23 that a bird survey conducted this summer observed sevenspecies of birds under national second-class protection, indicating a significant increase in the number of rare summer migratory birds. This reflects the ongoing positive trend in the ecologicalenvironment of the Yichang section of the Yangtze River.

Located in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, Yichang is an ecologically sensitive zone in the Yangtze River basin. In recent years, Yichang has prioritized ecologicalprotection, comprehensively promoting ecological restoration and green development along the Yichang section of the Yangtze River. It has created a natural scenic belt along the river and a number of national wetland parks, providing a favorable habitat for birds.

Inearly August this year, the Yichang Forestry and Horticulture Bureau, in collaboration with eight natural reserves including the Zhijiang Jinhu Wetland Park and the Yichang Birdwatching Enthusiasts Service Center, jointly conducted the 2024 Summer Bird Survey. The survey results showed a total of 88 species from40 families and 14 orders, with a total of 3,746 birds observed.

Li Xiang, a professor at Huazhong Agricultural University, noted that the survey observed various rare birds, including the Crested Serpent Eagle, Black Kite, and Peregrine Falcon. Among them, theWhiskered Tern was the most abundant, and the populations of two national second-class protected animals, the Pheasant-tailed Jacana and the Blue-throated Bee-eater, also showed significant growth.

Li Xiang explained that the Pheasant-tailed Jacana requires floating aquatic plants for its breeding nests. Previously, the number of Pheasant-tailed Jacana in the Zhijiang Jinhu Wetland Park had declined due to the reduction in芡实 (water chestnut) cultivation. To address this, Jinhu implemented a scientific plan for planting floating aquatic plants, providing more “homes” for the Pheasant-tailed Jacana. Thesurvey observed 38 Pheasant-tailed Jacana in Jinhu, indicating a significant increase in their population.

According to reports, in 2023, birdwatching enthusiasts in Yichang observed a Blue-throated Bee-eater nest in the Huangbai River Wetland Park in Yiling District, Yichang, and witnessed the successful breeding of five chicks. This year, after observing the same area during the breeding season, birdwatching enthusiasts found 14 young birds, indicating a growing population of Blue-throated Bee-eaters.

An official from the Yichang Forestry and Horticulture Bureau stated that they willincrease the frequency of scientific monitoring in areas where rare summer migratory birds are found. Natural reserve management agencies will further optimize the breeding environment for summer migratory birds, enhance the quality of ecological restoration along the Yichang section of the Yangtze River, provide safe and comfortable habitats for more rare birds, and continue to promote ecologicalprotection efforts along the Yangtze River.
