Iki City, Nagasaki Prefecture,August 22, 2024 – Today, in the final of the “Remote Island Koshien” held in Iki City,Nagasaki Prefecture, the team from Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture, defeated the Miyakojima team from the same prefecture 7-6, winning the championship of this national junior high school baseball tournament for students from remote islands.
The “Remote Island Koshien” was initiated by former professional baseball player, Toshiharu Murata, with the aim of creating opportunities for junior high school students from remote islands who are far from mainland teams and have limited opportunities tohone their skills. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the tournament, with 23 teams from remote islands across Japan gathering in Iki City to fight for their dreams.
The tournament began on August 20th, and after several rounds of fierce competition, the two Okinawa Prefecture teams, Ishigaki Island and Miyakojima, finally met in the final. During the match, both teams displayed exceptional skills and unwavering determination, with the score fluctuating back and forth. Ultimately, the Ishigaki Island team secured victory with a slight advantage thanks to their crucial performance in the final moments, lifting the championship trophy.
Ishigaki Island team captain, Rinsei Shimajir, said excitedly, “We are so happy to win! Thank you for the passionate support from the people of Iki! We faced many difficulties along the way, but we never gave up and finally achieved our dream.”
