Keywords: Japan travel, over 20%increase, minimal earthquake impact

SEOUL, Aug. 23 (Yonhap) – Despite a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Japan earlierthis month, raising concerns about a major earthquake, the number of Korean travelers to Japan continues to increase year-on-year.

According to data submitted tothe National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee by Incheon International Airport Corporation and Korea Airports Corporation on Aug. 23, the number of passengers traveling to and from Japan via domestic airports in the first 20 days ofthis month reached 1.385 million, up 20.8% year-on-year and 6.3% month-on-month.

Since Japan resumed visa-free entry in October 2022, the number of Korean passengers traveling to Japan has been steadily increasing. Even during the Japanese government’s “major earthquake” warning period (August 8-15), the number of passengers traveling to Japan via domestic airports reached 558,000, a year-on-year increaseof 26.8%. Additionally, during the Liberation Day holiday (August 15-18), the number of passengers traveling to Japan reached 269,000, a 21.4% increase compared to last year’s Liberation Day holiday (August 12-15, 221,000), unaffected by the cancellation of numerous flights due to Typhoon Haishen (No. 7) this year.

Industry experts attribute the continued growth in demand for Japan travel to the ongoing weakening of the Japanese yen and the low prices of low-cost airline tickets. It is expected that the Japan travel boom will continue for some time.

It is noteworthy that despite the earthquake concerns, the number of tourists visiting Japan continues to grow, indicating that the enthusiasm for Japan travel has not been significantly affected. This also reflects the international recognition of the Japanese government’s efforts in post-disaster reconstruction and safety assurance.

Furthermore, the rise of low-cost airlines has provided more convenient and economical options for Japan travel. As competition among airlines intensifies, ticket prices continue to decline, attracting more tourists to choose Japan as their travel destination.

In the future, as Japan’s economy recovers andtourism infrastructure continues to improve, the Japan travel market will become even more prosperous. Japan is expected to remain one of the most popular travel destinations for Korean tourists.
