The museum assessment and classification process evaluates museums based on their comprehensive management and infrastructure, collection management and scientific research, exhibition and social services, and is divided into three levels from highest to lowest. National Level 1 Museum is the highest level. Museum classification is an important indicator of a museum’s comprehensive strength and a key reference for determining whether a museum is “exciting” and “worth visiting.”
According to reports, the Zhengjia Natural Science Museum officially opened in 2018. It houses the only Medusa-ceratops fossil inChina, as well as rare collections such as Allosaurus fossils, offering Guangzhou residents a “dinosaur world.”
A relevant official from the Zhengjia Natural Science Museum introduced that the museum is constantly “updating” itself. The newly renovated dinosaur themed exhibition hall is about to debut, leading visitors into a different dinosaur world. Theupcoming exhibition of the original 40-meter-long Ultrasaurus fossil will bring Guangzhou into the “age of giant dragons.”
The official stated that the museum will take this recognition as a new starting point, continuously deepen education and research, create a more inclusive and sustainable environment, and strive for excellence in education andresearch, collection and exhibition, facilities and services, continuously optimizing cultural services and cultural product supply mechanisms.
The Zhengjia Natural Science Museum introduced that as the first natural science museum in Guangdong province, the museum has actively promoted the concept of modern museum construction in the past six years, using rich methods to promote the creative transformationand innovative development of high-quality cultural resources. This includes upgrading exhibition content and collection displays, improving venue construction and services; fully investing in public science education, creating a natural exploration science education system, etc.
Over the past six years, the museum has made progress in educational project development, “museum+” and practicalexchanges. Not only has it introduced interactive programs such as courses, handicrafts, and reading within the museum, but the education team also frequently brings mobile exhibits, interactive projects, and dynamic classrooms to primary and secondary schools and communities.
In addition to building diversified educational projects, the museum has also increasingly focused on strengthening collection researchand the utilization and transformation of research results in recent years, exploring the scientific value of its collections to provide strong support for exhibitions, social education, and scientific communication. In 2022, the museum collaborated with Xing Lida’s research group at China University of Geosciences (Beijing) to study the Allosaurus fossil in its collection, discovering multiple lesions on its body. It became the first dinosaur in the world to be scientifically recorded as suffering from spinal joint disease that spread to the shoulder. The museum published this research finding in the international journal “Historical Biology.”
This award as a National Level 2 Museum is a recognitionof the achievements made by the Zhengjia Natural Science Museum in natural science museum construction, exhibition display, science education, and collection research. It also marks a new stage in the development of the museum in the field of natural science museums in Guangdong province.
