JAKARTA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — Bank Indonesia (BI) on Tuesday held its benchmark interest rate steady at 6.25%, marking the fourth consecutive month of unchanged rates and aligning with market expectations. The decision comes as the Indonesian rupiah continues to strengthen.

The centralbank’s board of governors decided to keep the rate unchanged during its meeting on Aug. 20-21. In April, BI had raised the benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 6.25% tobolster the rupiah’s stability. At the time, the rupiah was weakening, hitting a four-year low near 16,300 rupiah per U.S. dollar.

However, the rupiah has since rebounded. As of Aug. 20, it had strengthened to 15,430 rupiah per dollar, up 5.34% from the end of July 2024. The rupiah’s appreciation has been more significant compared to other regional currencies like the Thai baht, Japanese yen, Philippinepeso, and South Korean won.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said the decision to maintain the benchmark rate at 6.25% is in line with the central bank’s commitment to stability, aiming to further stabilize the rupiah and ensure controlled inflation in 2024 and 2025. He noted that the rupiah has started to appreciate amid capital inflows, exceeding the appreciation of other emerging market currencies in the region. Looking ahead, the rupiah is expected to strengthen further.

Analysts believe the decision to keep the benchmark rate unchanged indicates a solid Indonesian economic foundation and manageable inflation pressures. The rupiah’s continuedappreciation reflects investor confidence in the Indonesian economy.

However, some experts caution that global economic prospects remain uncertain, and factors like U.S. Federal Reserve rate hikes could potentially impact the rupiah’s exchange rate. BI needs to closely monitor the global economic situation and take necessary measures to maintain the rupiah’s stability.
