Typhoon “Yun雀”, the ninth typhoon of the year, skimmed the western waters off Jeju Island on August 20th, accordingto Yonhap News Agency. As of now, the typhoon has not caused any major damage to the island.

As Typhoon “Yun雀” approached, hugewaves crashed against the coast near Reule-dong, Seogwipo City, Jeju Island. The Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration upgraded the typhoon warning for the outer waters south of Jeju Island to a typhoon advisory at 6 p.m. However, the typhoon special warning for Jeju Island, the waters off Jeju Island, and the western waters of the South Sea remains in effect.

Typhoon “Yun雀” is currently moving northward at a speed of33 kilometers per hour, located approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Seogwipo. As of 6 p.m., rainfall in major locations on Jeju Island was recorded as 99 millimeters at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, 76.5 millimeters at Geumdare,and 66 millimeters at the southern wall of Hallasan Mountain. The maximum instantaneous wind speed was recorded as 29.9 meters per second at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, 19.5 meters per second at Daejung, and 19.2 meters per second at Udo Island.

Due to the typhoon’s influence, all passenger ferries operating between Jeju Port and coastal ports were suspended after 4 p.m. While 495 flights departing from and arriving at Jeju Airport were not cancelled, 112 flights were delayed.

The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters reportedthat as of 6 p.m., no reports of typhoon-related damage had been received. The Jeju Provincial Government raised the emergency response level from Level 1 to Level 2 in the afternoon.
