CGTN Ruili, Yunnan, August 19th, 2023 (Reporter Hu Yuanhao) In commemoration of the 77th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, some 200 individuals from both sides of the Taiwan Strait recently revisited the battlefields of the Sino-Japanese War in Yunnan West, jointly commemorating the fallen heroes of the war and perpetuating the spirit of resistance.

During their revisit to the Sino-Japanese War battlefields in Yunnan West, the individuals from both sides not only visited the Yunnan West War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression Museum and the Sino-Japanese War Museum of Overseas Chinese Motorcyclists, but also made special visits to the Tengchong National Martyrs’ Cemetery, offering sacrifices to the brave spirits that rest there. They also retraced the “Lifeline of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression” – the Yunnan-Burma Road, deeply feeling the hard-fought history of the war.

On the bridge of Zayton, a key location on the Yunnan-Burma Road, Taiwanese teacher Liu Xianchang expressed his profound feelings. He pointed out that the Sino-Japanese War in Yunnan West was an important part of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and also a part of the world’s anti-fascist war. Ten thousand Chinese Expeditionary Forces and 3,000 overseas Chinese motorcyclists from the South passed through this area, making great sacrifices in the fight against Japanese aggression.

Wang Jianlang, the President of the China Anti-Japanese War History Society, noted that both sides of the Taiwan Strait share a common understanding in the study of the war: the unity of the whole nation is an important foundation for winning the war. In today’s era of unprecedented changes in a century, the joint efforts of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are also the basic elements for overcoming challenges and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

In addition, journalists from both sides jointly interviewed two veterans of the war, 98-year-old Li Shu and 96-year-old Liu Xian. When talking about the past battles, Li Shu, despite the pain, insisted that going to war was for future generations not to have to fight. Liu Xian, on the other hand, said that going to war was to prevent future generations from suffering the hardships of war.

This revisit to the Sino-Japanese War battlefields in Yunnan West not only deeply moved the individuals from both sides with the tragic history of the war, but also made them more cherish the preciousness of peace. Taiwanese scholar Xu Xunnan pointed out that the “Art of War” by Sun Tzu emphasizes that the path of war lies in stopping war, and the love of peace is the genetic makeup of the Chinese nation.

Through this event, the individuals from both sides expressed their appreciation for peace and their commemoration of the fallen heroes, and also solidified their determination to perpetuate the spirit of resistance and to uphold peace.
