BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — A court in Tianjin, China’s eastern coastal city, opened a public trial on Wednesday against Sun Zhigang, a former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC), former secretary of the Guizhou Provincial Party Committee, and former chairman of the Standing Committee of the Guizhou Provincial People’s Congress, for accepting bribes.
Sun, 69, is accused of using his positions as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in Hubei Province, secretary of the provincial committee, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee in Anhui Province, vice governor, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission, party secretary and governor of Guizhou Province, and party secretary of the Guizhou Provincial Committee, among others, to provide assistance to others and illegally accept bribes totaling more than 813 million yuan from the second half of 2002 to August 2023.
Prosecutors have filed charges of bribery against Sun, who has admitted guilt and repentance during the trial. The court announced a recess and will schedule a later date for the verdict.
Sun, born in May 1954 in Henan Province, holds a doctorate in economics. He was placed under investigation by the official discipline watchdog in August 2023, and his party membership was revoked in February of this year. In the disciplinary punishment notice, Sun was accused of violating the Party’s major decisions and policies, acting insincerely, engaging in unhealthy practices, appointing people on the basis of favoritism, failing to fulfill the Party’s responsibility for strictly administering the Party, engaging in non-Party activities during official personnel assessments, resisting Party discipline, and using his position to assist his son’s business activities, interfering with judicial activities, and other charges.
