CHENGDU, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — In the Three Gorges reservoir area, Baiguoya Village, where soybeans and corn flourish in August, was once a barren land overgrown with weeds.
“Last year, this was a wasteland covered in wild grass,” said Qiao Qiang, Party secretary and village committee director of Baiguoya Village in Zhijiang County, Hubei Province.
Located in the hinterland of the Three Gorges reservoir area, with its high altitude and remote location, Baiguoya Village has implemented measures to address the issue of land leaving agricultural use in 2023. The village has reclaimed over 1,300 acres of abandoned farmland. However, the question of what to plant, who should plant it, and how to plant it remained a challenge.
To prevent the land from becoming abandoned again, village officials actively consulted with the agricultural department of Zhijiang County and sought technical support. Based on the village’s geographical and climatic conditions, agricultural experts from Zhijiang County recommended a grain-soybean intercropping system, where corn and soybeans are interplanted and the corn varieties are upgraded to achieve a double harvest.
After addressing the issue of what to plant, the village officials conducted a survey of the village’s labor force and explored three planting models: for large, contiguous plots of reclaimed land, the village introduced market-oriented entities to lease the land for large-scale farming; for scattered plots, the village encouraged villagers with labor capabilities to lease and manage the land; and for plots that neither of the above options wanted to farm, the village’s agricultural cooperative provided professional services for farming and planting.

With a clear direction and method in place, village officials led the villagers to meticulously prepare the land for the grain-soybean intercropping system, introduced high-quality sweet corn seeds for planting, and invited technical experts to conduct training sessions on cultivation and management. In less than a year, the abandoned land had been transformed into a “wealthy farmland” with vibrant potential for increased production and efficiency.
Qiao Changju, a villager, has leased 10 acres of abandoned land for mixed planting. Previously, he grew corn varieties that were of poor quality and unsellable on the market, so he had to shell the corn and dry it to make corn flour for others to feed pigs, earning an average of 1,200 yuan per acre. “Now, with mixed planting, I average over 2,400 yuan per acre in corn alone, and about 800 yuan from the soybeans, too. I also work at the village cooperative, and my annual income is now roughly five to six times what it was before!” he said.

“Baiguoya Village has worked tirelessly to activate dormant land resources, turning barren land into fertile fields. Not only has there been a significant increase in villagers’ incomes, but the collective economy has also grown rapidly,” said Qiao Qiang. This year, the village’s agricultural cooperative organized a socialized service agency to farm and plant on behalf of villagers working outside, with an expected sweet corn sales volume of more than 200,000 jin, and the collective economy expecting an additional income of 50,000 yuan.
This transformation not only improves the lives of local villagers but also demonstrates the effectiveness of the rural revitalization strategy in practical implementation. Through scientific planning and management, Baiguoya Village successfully converts neglected land into a driving force for rural economic development and increased prosperity for farmers, providing a model for other regions to learn from.
