TOKYO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine, has a long history and deep roots in Japan. Historical records show that acupuncture was introduced to Japan in the 6th century and gradually integrated into the country’s indigenous medical system. The flourishing period of Japanese acupuncture was mainly during the Nara and Heian periods, and it developed its unique characteristics during the Azuchi-Momoyama era.
He Wei, born in Beijing into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, has been connected with acupuncture since childhood. His father, He Puming, is the founder of the “He Family Acupuncture Three-Opening Method,” and has received the highest honor in the Chinese traditional medicine industry, the “Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine,” as well as being a representative inheritor of the “Traditional Chinese Acupuncture” project listed in the “Human非物质文化遗产代表作名录.”
He Wei has been engaged in acupuncture in Japan for many years and serves as the president of the Japanese Chinese Acupuncture Research Association. In an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency’s “East-West Question,” He Wei provided a detailed account of why acupuncture has taken root in Japan and the differences between Chinese and Japanese acupuncture techniques. He noted that while there are differences in acupuncture needles, treatment methods, and treatment ranges between Japanese and Chinese acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture places more emphasis on health preservation, while Chinese acupuncture is suitable for a wider range of diseases.
He Wei highlighted the “He Family Fire Needle” therapy he has promoted in Japan, which is an innovative treatment method that combines traditional acupuncture with modern medicine. He believes that acupuncture is not only a practical medicine but also a humanistic medicine, focusing on treating the individual as a whole, body and mind. Through the Four Diagnostic Methods of observation, listening, inquiry, and palpation, He Wei is able to thoroughly understand the physical condition of patients, thereby devising targeted treatment plans.
Although He Wei’s clinic is located in Japan, it still maintains the distinctive features of Chinese acupuncture and focuses on treating various diseases. His work has not only been recognized in Japan but also made a positive contribution to the overseas spread of Chinese acupuncture.
