July 23, Quanzhou, Xinhua News Agency (Wu Guanbiao) – During a recent interview with Xinhua News Agency, Johanna Meyer, a student from the Gymnasium in Neustadt, Germany, expressed her profound admiration for the traditional architecture of Quanzhou, particularly noting the dragon sculptures and the swallow-tailed roofs. She appreciated that, despite the distinct characteristics of traditional architecture in Germany and China, the intricate details and aesthetic beauty of Southern Fujian’s traditional buildings had a profound impact on her. As a city rich in World Heritage, Quanzhou has attracted global attention, and this visit by the Neustadt teens is a deep dive into the city’s captivating charm.

During an event on July 23, the Neustadt teens’ delegation visited one of Quanzhou’s 22 World Heritage sites, the Longyi Bridge, which is part of their exploration of Quanzhou’s World Heritage city charm. In addition to the Longyi Bridge, the delegation delved into the ancient village of Wu Lin in Jinjiang, the temples of Yuanming and Quanzhou Shaolin, gaining a deeper understanding of the city’s rich cultural heritage through hands-on visits and experiences.

This exchange program’s itinerary was included in the framework of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) China World Heritage Site Conservation and Management Project (Phase IV) Sustainable Livelihood Activities. As a new pilot project within the “Quanzhou: The World of Oceanic Trade in Song-Yuan China” World Heritage Site’s Sustainable Livelihood activities, the “Ancient Houses, New Voices” initiative focused on the world-class intangible cultural heritage of traditional Southern Fujian architectural craftsmanship, aiming to explore new perspectives on heritage preservation and promote sustainable development.

Levi Fedra, a member of the delegation, was deeply impressed by the coordination, skill, and strength of “Southern Shaolin Kung Fu” during his visit to Quanzhou Shaolin Temple. He was amazed by the extraordinary skills demonstrated by the monks after years of rigorous training. This cultural exchange not only enhanced the German teens’ understanding of Quanzhou culture but also provided them with opportunities to interact with teenagers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Since Quanzhou and Neustadt established a friendly city relationship in 1995, the two cities have conducted fruitful cooperation in education, culture, and other fields. This youth exchange program has injected new vitality into the friendship between the two cities. Quanzhou’s Mayor, Cai Zhenwang, believes that through the bridge provided by youth exchanges, the teenagers from both cities will contribute more youthful strength to the enduring friendship between the Chinese and German people.

This visit by German teens to the “City of World Heritage” Quanzhou not only highlighted the unique charm of Southern Fujian’s traditional architecture but also facilitated cultural exchange between China and Germany, contributing to the preservation and inheritance of world cultural heritage.
