Hungarian Culture, Eastern Influence, Scholar
BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) — In an interview with Xinhua’s “East and West Questions” column, Hungarian Sinologist Endre Selye, also known as “Yu Shanduo,” has argued that the uniqueness of Hungarian culture does not stem from the West, but from its Eastern roots. He believes that Hungarian culture, particularly in its linguistic, artistic, and folkloric aspects, shares deep connections with China and other Eastern cultures.
Yu points out that the Hungarian language contains a significant number of words and grammatical structures similar to those found in Turkish, Mongolian, Manchu, and Chinese languages, all of which belong to the Altaic language family. Despite historical influences from the West, the Eastern elements play a significant role in Hungary’s cultural DNA, according to Yu.
The scholar further explains that Hungarian folk music, dance, and architectural styles also exhibit similarities with Eastern, particularly Chinese, arts. These commonalities, he says, not only reflect historical facts of cultural exchanges but also substantiate the Eastern lineage in Hungarian culture.
Yu’s perspective offers a new angle for understanding the multidimensional and complex nature of Hungarian culture and provides a deeper theoretical foundation for cultural exchanges between China and Hungary.
