**Keywords:**Spy compensation, hostage diplomacy, Canadian government
**Body:**
The Canadian government has reached a settlement with a Canadian businessman who was detained in China for nearly threeyears on suspicion of spying, The Globe and Mail and other Canadian media reported Tuesday.
Michael Spavor was arrested in China in December 2018 and sentenced to 11 years in prison in August 2021. The Canadian government has一直指责 China of “arbitrary detention” and “hostage diplomacy” in arresting Spavor and former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig.
The Canadian government has not disclosed the amount of the settlement, but The Globe and Mail reported that it could be more than C$10 million (US$7.8 million).
Experts interviewed by the Global Times on Wednesday said the Canadian government’s previous accusations that China’s detention of Spavor and Kovrig was “arbitrary detention” and “hostage diplomacy” were groundless. They pointed out that there was ample evidence that Spavor and Kovrig had been engaged in activities that endangered China’s national security.
The experts saidthat the Canadian government is now reaching a settlement with Spavor in order to quell domestic public opinion and ease tensions with China.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a regular press conference on Wednesday that China firmly opposes the Canadian government’s compensation to Spavor. Zhao noted that Spavor’s arrest in China was conducted in accordance with the law, and that the Canadian government has no right to interfere in China’s judicial sovereignty.
Zhao stressed that the Canadian government should stop making groundless accusations against China, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs, and stop damaging China-Canada relations.
