**Replenishment Operation for Full Reopening of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Launched**

Beijing, March 8 (China News Service) — According to the official WeChat account of the Ministry of Water Resources, to continuously promote the ecological restoration of rivers and lakes in North China, comprehensively address groundwater over-exploitation, andresolve the water shortage issue in the section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal north of the Yellow River, the Ministry of Water Resources recently issued the “Replenishment Plan for Full Reopening of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in 2024,” initiating the implementation of the replenishment operation for the full reopening of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in 2024.

According to the plan, the replenishment operation for the full reopening of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, from 2023 to 2024, willfocus on resolving the water shortage issue in the section north of the Yellow River, achieving full replenishment from the section north of the Yellow River to Beijing. The second phase, from 2025 to 2035, will gradually realize the full replenishment of the entire Grand Canal.

The water sources for replenishment will mainly come from the Yellow River, Yangtze River, and Huai River. Replenishment methods include diverting water from the Yellow River to the Grand Canal, diverting water from the Yangtze River to the Grand Canal, diverting water from the Huai River to the Grand Canal, and regulating water from reservoirs. Among them, the Yellow River-to-Grand Canal diversion project will divert water from Dongping Lake in Shandong Province and flow through Jinan City, Liaocheng City, Dezhou City, and Binzhou City before finally being discharged into the Grand Canal. The Yangtze River-to-Grand Canal diversion project will divert water from Yangzhou City in Jiangsu Province and flow through Taizhou City and Yancheng City before finally being discharged into the Grand Canal. The Huai River-to-Grand Canal diversion project will divert water from Bengbu City in Anhui Province and flow through Suzhou City and Xuzhou Citybefore finally being discharged into the Grand Canal.

The replenishment operation for the full reopening of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal will effectively improve the ecological environment of the Grand Canal, restore its shipping function, and promote the economic and social development along its route. At the same time, the replenishment operation will also drive the construction of water conservancy infrastructure in the surrounding areas, improve the management level of water conservancy projects, and provide strong support for the protection and utilization of the Grand Canal.
