**FAO Food Price Index Continues to Decline in February**
BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) — The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations released data on Tuesday showing that its Food Price Index (FFPI) decreased by 0.7 percent month-on-month in February, marking a 10.5 percent annual decline. The agency attributedthe decline in the FFPI to lower cereal prices.
The FFPI measures the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities, including cereals, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils, and sugar.
In February, the cereal price index fell by 2.4 percent month-on-month and 17.9 percent year-on-year. FAO said this was largely due to lower wheat and maize prices. Wheat prices fell for the fourth consecutive month amid ample global supplies. Maize prices also declined on expectations of a bumper harvest.
The meat price index rose by 1.1 percent month-on-month and 1.5 percent year-on-year in February. FAO attributed this to higher pork and beef prices. Pork prices increased mainly due to increased demand from China, while beef prices rose amid tight global supplies.
The dairy price index declined by 1.4 percent month-on-month and 2.8 percent year-on-year in February. FAO said this was primarily driven by lower milk powder prices. Ample global milk powder inventories led to the price decline.
The vegetable oil price index fell by 2.3 percent month-on-month and 16.5 percent year-on-year in February. FAO noted that this was mainly due to lower palm oil and soybean oil prices. Palm oil prices declined on increased production, while soybean oil prices fell on expectations of a large soybean harvest in South America.
The sugar price index rose by 2.6 percent month-on-month and 13.8 percent year-on-year in February. FAO said this was primarily due to reduced production in India, the world’s second-largest sugar producer. The decline in Indian production has tightened global sugar supplies.
FAO noted that despite the decline in February, the FFPI remains above its pre-pandemic level in 2020. The agency expects food prices to remain volatile in the coming months, influenced by factors such as the Ukraine conflict, weather conditions, and economic conditions.
