Weili County in Xinjiang’s Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture is located on the northeastern edge of the Taklamakan Desert. In recent years, the local government has vigorously carried out the “Three-North” Shelterbelt Project, planting trees on the edge of thedesert, with remarkable results.

At present, Weili County’s seedling cultivation work is in full swing, with plans to cultivate tens of millions of seedlings for desert greening. These seedlings include drought-tolerant and salt-alkali-tolerant species such as sea buckthorn, tamarisk, and red willow, which can effectively prevent wind erosion and improve the desert ecosystem.

It is understood that Weili County’s afforestation work began in the 1980s. After years of efforts, more than one million acres of trees have been planted, forming a protective forest belt mainly composed of sea buckthorn and tamarisk, effectively blocking the northward expansion of the desert.

The local government said that it will continue to increase afforestation efforts and strive to create a wide green barrier on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert in the next few years, contributing to improving the desert ecosystem and ensuring the production and life of local residents.
