Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China on February 8th showed that in January this year, the Producer Price Index (PPI) of China’s industrial producers decreased both on a monthly and yearly basis, but the rate of decrease narrowed. Experts pointed out that this is mainly influenced by the volatility of international commodity prices and the traditional production off-season in some domestic industries. Despite this, the data still reflects a warming trend in China’s industrial production.
The data shows that in January, the PPI decreased by 0.3% month-on-month, with the rate of decrease narrowing by 0.1 percentage points from the previous month; it decreased by 1.1% year-on-year, with the rate of decrease narrowing by 0.2 percentage points from the previous month. Among them, the prices of production materials decreased by 1.8%, with the rate of decrease narrowing by 0.3 percentage points; the prices of consumer goods remained unchanged; the prices of food increased by 0.8%, and the prices of non-food increased by 0.1%.
Experts analyzed that the volatility of international commodity prices has a significant impact on China’s PPI. In January, the prices of international crude oil, metals, and other commodities fluctuated greatly, which put certain pressure on China’s industrial producer’s output price. In addition, some domestic industries entered the traditional production off-season, leading to the narrowing deflation of industrial producer’s output price.
Although the deflation of China’s PPI narrowed in January, experts said that China’s economy still faces certain downward pressures. In the next step, the government should continue to implement active fiscal policy and prudent monetary policy, stabilize market expectations, and promote stable growth in industrial production.
