A unique cross-strait “Small Tea Gathering” recently took place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, aiming to foster greater cultural exchange between the two sides. At the gathering, Taiwanese ceramic sculptor Yuching余 shared his experience of introducing Taiwan’s charcoal-fired ceramic craft to Hangzhou. Participants discussed the integration of tea culture and ceramic design.

The gathering revolved around the theme of “water is the mother of tea, and the vessel is the father of tea.” Participants explored the mysteries of pairing different types of tea with appropriate vessels. Yuching explained why a guan碗is used for drinking West Lake Longjing tea, while charcoal-fired pots or purple sand pots are commonly used for Taiwanese oolong tea. He pointed out that the pairing of tea vessels and tea types not only affects the taste of the tea but also embodies the profound connotation of tea culture.

The successful hosting of the cross-strait “Small Tea Gathering” injected new vitality into Zhejiang’s tea culture and built a bridge for cross-strait cultural exchange.
