Born on January 19, 1931, in Akita Prefecture, Japan, and educated at Tokyo University’s Department of Education, Akimoto’s career spanned multiple fields. He held various positions within the UN, including as the first Japanese staff member at UN Headquarters, Executive Chairman of the Staff Union at UN Headquarters, and First Vice President of the International Civil Service Union (ICSU).
