Headline: Google Chrome for Android to Add Practical Feature “Read Out Loud,” Allowing Visually Impaired to Enjoy Reading News and Articles
According to ITHome, the Android version of Google Chrome is about to add a practical feature – “Read out loud” – which will enable users to free their eyes and listen to news, articles, or web content with their ears. Currently, this feature is being tested on the Android version of Chrome and is expected to be officially launched soon.
As reported, users only need to click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the Chrome browser and select “Listen to this page.” A mini player will then pop up from the bottom of the screen, displaying the progress, webpage title, and website name. Clicking on the player will expand additional control options, including fast forward, rewind, adjust playback speed (from 0.5x to 4x), switch voice for reading, and more. What’s more considerate is that it can also turn on the “highlight text and automatically scroll” function, enabling simultaneous auditory and visual experiences. The mini player will always stay at the bottom of the screen, and the reading will not be interrupted even if you switch tabs or lock the device. However, after exiting Chrome or switching to other apps, the reading will stop.
It is worth mentioning that this “Read out loud” feature is different from the “Read aloud” feature on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro phones and the “Read” function provided by the Android system. The “Read aloud” feature on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro can only read selected text, while the “Read” function on Android is applicable to selected text in any application. On the contrary, the “Read out loud” feature specifically designed for Chrome browser can read the entire webpage content, which is more convenient and faster.
The launch of this feature will undoubtedly greatly facilitate visually impaired people and those who want to use the internet when commuting, doing housework, or otherwise inconvenient to look at the screen. After its official launch, we believe that this feature will become a favorite among many users.
