Zhao Jiawei, a professor at the School of Pharmacy at Shenzhen Tech University (in preparation), and Vijay Sankaran’s team from Boston Children’s Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School recently published a major study in the journal “Cell.” They conducted a genetic analysis of over 460,000 patient samples using the UK Biobank database and successfully identified a new family risk factor for myeloid malignant blood tumors. This discovery is expected to provide new strategies and methods for early screening and intervention of early-onset leukemia.
Professor Zhao Jiawei introduced: “Currently, the main treatment for leukemia relies on the transplantation of healthy hematopoietic stem cells. However, hematopoietic stem cell matching between non-relatives usually requires a long wait, which may delay the patient’s treatment.” In order to find more effective prevention and treatment strategies, the research team began to study the genetic mechanism of leukemia in depth.
After in-depth research, they discovered a new gene – CTR9. The genetic mutation carried by this gene can increase the susceptibility of blood tumors by 10 times. More importantly, the research team also revealed how this mutation affects the development of blood tumors. Vijay Sankaran said: “These findings provide us with a new perspective on the regulation of this gene, making it possible for us to prevent blood tumors by regulating this gene.””
