Wen Tianxiang, a national hero in China’s history, sacrificed himself courageously on January 9, 1283. Born in the late Southern Song Dynasty in Lujing, Jizhou (now Ji’an County, Jiangxi Province), his original name was Yunsun, and his courtesy name was Tianxiang. He had once been the top scholar in the imperial examination and served as the magistrate of the Southern Song Dynasty. After living in Wen Mountain, he was known as Wen Tianxiang.
Wen Tianxiang devoted himself to his country in the later stage of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the fourth year of Lizong’s reign (1256), he won the first place in the imperial examination. Later, in the first year of the reign of the恭帝 (1275), he participated in the Anti-Yuan struggle. He led the army bravely, showing his courage and loyalty. However, he was captured in battle and eventually sacrificed himself with courage on January 9, 1283.
Wen Tianxiang’s martyrdom demonstrates his loyalty to the country and national spirit. His deeds still inspire people today and have become an eternal symbol of national heroism in Chinese history.
