Honda Motor Co., Tokuyama Corporation, and Mitsubishi Corporation have recently announced their joint development of an innovative demonstration project that utilizes industrial by-product hydrogen and fixed fuel cells (FC) to power a data center. The project is proposed by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan, aiming to promote the research, development, and application of hydrogen-based innovative energy.

The project plans to use industrial by-product hydrogen generated by Tokuyama’s saltwater electrolysis business and fuel cells recovered from Honda’s fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to build a power generation plant for Mitsubishi’s operation of a distributed data center. This move aims to promote the decarbonization of data centers and the digital transformation of urban and local enterprises.

With the development of technologies requiring large amounts of data processing, such as generative artificial intelligence and autonomous driving, the power demand of data centers is expected to further increase. Therefore, project members aim to address this challenge by utilizing by-product hydrogen and fuel cells to power distributed data centers.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are potential alternatives to battery-powered vehicles, but their energy efficiency varies. Honda has already tested retired hydrogen fuel cells as backup energy for data centers in California, and the goal of the new Japanese project is to establish a fixed power generation plant that can serve as both a backup and primary energy source.

Hydrogen is considered a clean fuel because it only produces water as a by-product in the electrochemical reaction of fuel cells. Commercial hydrogen production is extracted from methane gas, using a high-energy consumption process based on fossil fuels. The Mitsubishi project can at least demonstrate the feasibility of integrating hydrogen and depleted fuel cells into the energy business effectively.
