TWR Unleashes the 650-HP Supercat: A Retro-Futuristic Jaguar XJ-S Restomod
A British engineering firm reimagines the classic Jaguar XJ-S, blending 1970s and 80s motorsport aesthetics with modern power.
TWR (TomWalkinshaw Racing) has unveiled the first of 88 planned examples of its extravagant Supercat, a restomod based on the iconic Jaguar XJ-S. This isn’t just a restoration; it’s a complete reimagining, boasting aggressive styling, extensive carbon fiber components, and a potent 12-cylinder engine delivering a breathtaking 650 horsepower. The car’s striking design is the brainchild of Khyzyl Saleem, a renowned automotive designer whose inspiration draws heavily from the golden age of motorsport.
I’m heavily inspired by the 70s and 80sera – IMSA, Trans-Am, Group A cars, and of course, the original Jaguar designs – the XJR-9, XJR-15 and most importantly, the XJ220, Saleem commented. This influence is palpable in the Supercat’s aggressive lines. Muscular wheelarches, functional hood vents, a sharp front splitter, a pair of aerodynamic rear wings, and side-exit exhaust pipes all contribute to a design that exudes the spirit of classic motorsport while pushing the boundaries of modern aesthetics. The result is a vehicle that seamlessly blends retro charm with futuristic flair, a testament to Saleem’s mastery of automotive design.
The Supercat is more than just a pretty face. The 650-horsepower engine promises exhilarating performance, transforming the classic grand tourer into a true powerhouse. While specific engine details remain undisclosed by TWR, the sheer power output hints at significant modifications andupgrades beyond a simple engine tune. This performance enhancement, combined with the extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber, suggests a vehicle capable of delivering both breathtaking speed and agile handling.
TWR’s Supercat represents a significant investment in automotive heritage and innovation. The limited production run of 88 units underscores theexclusivity of this project, ensuring that each Supercat will be a highly sought-after piece of automotive art. The price remains unannounced, but given the level of craftsmanship, bespoke design, and performance capabilities, it’s safe to assume that this restomod will command a substantial premium.
The Supercat’s unveiling marks a significant moment for both TWR and the automotive restoration world. It showcases the potential for blending classic design with modern technology to create truly unique and exhilarating vehicles. The success of this project may well inspire other companies to explore similar avenues, potentially leading to a resurgence of high-quality, limited-productionrestomods in the years to come.
