Pony.ai Rides High on GAC Investment as Robotaxi Race Heats Up
On the same day Elon Musk launched Tesla’s Robotaxi service, a major development unfolded in the burgeoning Chinese autonomous vehicle market. GAC Group, a prominent Chinese automaker, announced a $27 million (approximately ¥190 million RMB) investment in Pony.ai, a leading Chinese robotaxi unicorn. This strategic move underscores the intensifying global competition and significant growth potential withinthe autonomous driving sector.
The investment marks yet another milestone for Pony.ai, which has secured over $1.1 billion (approximately ¥7.8 billion RMB) in funding across more than ten rounds since its inception in 2016. Following its Series D funding round, the company boasts an impressive valuation of $8.5 billion (approximately ¥60 billion RMB). With its recent filing for an overseas IPO with the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) in April, Pony.ai is poised for further expansion.
GAC’s Strategic Investment and Deeper Collaboration
GAC’s investment, detailed in a public announcement on October 10th, is channeled through its wholly-owned subsidiary, GAC Capital. The move aims to deepen business synergyand accelerate GAC’s advancements in autonomous driving technology. This investment isn’t a one-off; GAC and Pony.ai share a history of collaboration.
In April 2022, Pony.ai served as a strategic investor in the Series A funding round for Ruqi Chuxing, aride-hailing company under GAC. Later that year, the two companies partnered to launch a mixed operation model in Guangzhou’s Nansha district, combining human-driven vehicles with Pony.ai’s robotaxis.
This collaboration further solidified in April 2024 with the establishment of Zhuifeng Intelligent, a joint venture between Pony.ai, Toyota China, and GAC Toyota. This ¥1 billion+ RMB venture focuses on L4 autonomous robotaxi services, leveraging Pony.ai and Toyota China’s technological expertise and GAC Toyota’s vehicle manufacturing capabilities. A concept vehicle, the Bozhi 4XRobotaxi, resulting from this collaboration, was showcased at GAC Toyota’s Open Technology Day in June, with plans for pilot production already underway. Pony.ai Vice President Mo Luyi highlighted that the Bozhi 4X is entering the trial production phase, and a customized production line is being prepared at theGAC Toyota factory.
A Pivotal Moment for the Robotaxi Industry
The confluence of Musk’s Tesla Robotaxi launch and Pony.ai’s substantial investment signifies a critical juncture for the global robotaxi industry. The increasing competition and substantial financial backing demonstrate the growing confidence in the technology’s potential to disrupt the transportation sector. Pony.ai’s impending IPO further solidifies its position as a major player, setting the stage for further innovation and expansion within the Chinese and potentially global markets. The success of these ventures will be closely watched as the industry navigates the challenges and opportunities presented by thisrapidly evolving technology.
