UN Report: Israel’s Actions in Gaza War Meet the Threshold of Genocide

A UN special committee has declared that Israel’s actions in theGaza war meet the threshold of genocide, a finding that has sparked international outrage and a fierce debate. The report, released on November 14th,2024, details widespread destruction and alleged war crimes, painting a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.

The report, issued by theUN Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, alleges that the scale of destruction in Gaza – estimated to be equivalent to the impact of two nuclear bombs, with approximately 25,000 tons of explosives deployed between October 2023 and early 2024 – meets the threshold of genocide. The committee highlights the long-term health consequences for generations of Gazansresulting from this devastation.

The report further accuses Israel of employing hunger as a weapon of war, imposing collective punishment on the Palestinian population. It criticizes the Israeli military’s use of AI-assisted targeting with minimal human oversight, coupled with the use of heavy ordnance, as evidence of a disregard for the obligation todistinguish between civilians and combatants, and a failure to take adequate precautions to prevent civilian casualties.

The committee condemns Israel’s continued blockade of Gaza, defying repeated UN appeals, binding orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and Security Council resolutions. The report alleges that Israel’s targeted attacks and killingsof civilians and aid workers, along with the deliberate infliction of death, starvation, and serious injury, constitute a violation of international humanitarian law. The report also cites accounts of dehumanizing, cruel, and humiliating treatment of Palestinians, including women and children, by Israeli soldiers in Gaza.

The report’s findings have been met with swift and varied reactions. The Israeli government, which has consistently accused the UN of bias towards Palestine, has yet to issue an official response, according to a report in The Guardian on November 15th. This silence follows Israel’s rejection of an ICJruling in January 2024, which called on Israel to comply with the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and prevent genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to international law, a claim directly contradicted by this latest UN report.

The United StatesState Department has dismissed the report as baseless, with Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel issuing a statement to that effect on November 14th. Conversely, former UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn linked the UK government’s refusal to acknowledge the genocide in Gaza to its complicity in one of the greatest evilsof our time, urging the UK to halt all arms sales to Israel.

Rami Khouri, a researcher at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, (further commentary from Khouri would be included here, if available). Meanwhile, aid organizations working in Gaza reported that at least 20aid workers have been killed by Israeli forces in the past month, four of whom were in clearly marked vehicles.

The UN Special Committee, established by the UN General Assembly in December 1968, is mandated to examine human rights conditions in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, the West Bank, and the GazaStrip. This latest report underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for international action to address the alleged atrocities in Gaza. The long-term implications of this conflict, both for the Palestinian people and the international community, remain deeply uncertain.
