Tencent’s recent success with games like Black Myth: Wukong, Endless Winter, and PUBG highlights a new strategic approach: leveraging the strengths of diverse studios. This strategy, as outlined by Tencent’s ChiefStrategy Officer James Mitchell during the company’s Q3 2024 earnings call, capitalizes on the unique advantages of both internal and external studios.

Mitchell emphasized the growing importance of evergreen games in a market where launching new blockbuster titles is increasingly challenging. He believes that focusing on nurturing existing successful games through continuous investment and dedicated management is crucial for long-term success. This strategyis particularly relevant for Tencent, which boasts a diverse portfolio of studios with distinct strengths.

Internal studios excel in player-versus-player (PvP) games, a core competency that Tencent will continue to strengthen. External studios,however, offer a valuable complement to this strategy. For example, the developers behind Black Myth: Wukong specialize in content-driven and story-rich games, while others excel in strategy games, as demonstrated by Dawn Awakening: Life.

This strategic shift reflects Tencent’s recognition of the evolving landscape ofthe gaming industry. The company is actively seeking to diversify its portfolio by collaborating with studios that possess expertise in different genres and gameplay styles.
