Japanese Telecoms Race to Build Space-Based Communication Networks for Disaster Resilience

Tokyo, Japan – In a bid to bolster disaster preparedness, Japanese telecommunications companies areaccelerating the development and testing of space-based communication infrastructure. This includes direct communication between satellite networks and smartphones, as well as flying base stations operated bydrones.

KDDI’s Breakthrough

In October, KDDI, a major Japanese telecom operator, successfully conducted a trial connecting its smartphones directly toSpaceX’s Starlink satellite network. This demonstration marks a significant step towards establishing a resilient communication network that can function even in the event of major natural disasters, when terrestrial infrastructure may be compromised.

Drones Take to the Skies

Beyond satellite networks, Japanese companies are also exploring the potential of drones as communication hubs. SoftBank, another major telecom provider, announced the successful flight of its large-scale drone in the stratosphere in October. Meanwhile, NTT Docomoaims to commercialize its drone-based communication technology by 2026.
