Ukraine Launches Largest-Scale Drone Attack on Moscow, Causing Airport Closures
Moscow, Russia – On November 10, 2024, Russia reported a significant drone attack on Moscow, claiming it was the largest-scale attack on the Russian capital by Ukrainian forces to date. At least 25 drones were launched, according to Russian officials, resulting in the temporary closure of two major Moscow airports.
The attack targeted the Ramenskoye and Kolomenskoye districts of Moscow Oblast, as well as the Domodedovo airport southwest of the city. According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, all drones were destroyed before reaching their intended targets. He reported no casualties or property damage, though emergency personnel were dispatched to the affected areas.
The Ramenskoye district, located approximately 45 kilometers southeast of the Kremlin, was one of the primary targets. The attack prompted the closure of both Domodedovoand Zhukovsky airports, with Russian air traffic control citing the drone attacks as the reason for the suspension of operations.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also reported the destruction of 17 drones over the Bryansk Oblast, a region bordering Ukraine.
This incident marks a significant escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with the latter increasingly employing drone technology to target Russian infrastructure and military installations. The attack on Moscow comes as tensions between the two countries remain high, particularly following recent Ukrainian military gains in the eastern Donbas region.
Reactions and Analysis
The attack has drawn condemnation from Russia, which has accused Ukraine of escalating theconflict and resorting to terrorist tactics. Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, but the incident is consistent with the country’s recent strategy of targeting Russian military and logistical assets.
International observers have expressed concern over the escalating conflict and the potential for further escalation. The use of drones in urbanenvironments poses significant risks to civilian populations, raising concerns about the potential for civilian casualties.
Looking Forward
The drone attack on Moscow highlights the evolving nature of warfare in the 21st century, with drones playing an increasingly prominent role in conflict. It also underscores the growing vulnerability of major cities to attack, even in the absence of conventional military forces.
The incident is likely to further strain relations between Russia and Ukraine, and could potentially lead to further escalation of the conflict. The international community will be closely watching developments in the coming days and weeks to assess the potential impact of this attack on the broader geopolitical landscape.
